WHAT RECESSION? EDITION

To contact us Click HERE

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: Feb. 22, 2013
WHAT RECESSION?  EDITION
15.3 million.  That's how many light vehicles JD Power and Associates predicts will be sold this year: http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130222/RETAIL01/130229959/u-s-auto-sales-remain-robust-despite-rising-fuel-prices-looming#axzz2LeAhd6Zo
This is up from 14.5 million last year.  Let's put this in perspective, shall we? This is roughly the equivalent of everyone in North Carolina AND South Carolina buying a new car, including children!
Considering the average price for a new car is just a smidge above $30,000 these days, this equates to roughly $460 billion spent on new cars and trucks in 2013.  Keep in mind this does NOT include heavy-duty vehicles.
So where is all this dough coming from?  Isn't unemployment high and the economy on the rocks? Car buyers surely wouldn't tell you as much.  Essentially, it seems consumers are ignoring the doom and gloom and are doing what makes them happy.  Bravo, I say.  New and used car sales help the economy and many are buying more fuel-efficient vehicles, which saves at the pump and makes OPEC quake in their shoes.
Additionally, now that banks have relaxed their loan standards a bit, car buyers are finding it easier to obtain financing.  Remember 2009 and 2010 when you had to have an 800 credit score just to get a loan?  Hopefully those days are gone for good.
It's nice to see the auto industry back on its feet and consumers buying cars again.  It keeps the money flowing all around and contributes to new car models and innovation.
Now only if things would improve in Europe so they can follow suit.

What are your thoughts?

My Final Thought:
This is the vehicle equivalent of a Turducken: http://jalopnik.com/it-s-a-truck-carrying-a-truck-carrying-a-truck-carrying-253309099
I love this for its absolute insanity and for the fact that the driver pulled it off...almost.

Spring 2013

It's coming on Springtime and the perfect opportunity to grab a glimpse of the "Studio".  I enjoy sharing my "quirky", vintage and repurposed style!  In my world, each and every piece has a story... Each and every piece belongs.  They all make up our "Warehouse Chic" style.   Here is the story behind some of my favorite finds.
First,  the vintage dining room table... an old, industrial, wooden table with glass inserts.  I adore it because the reflection off the glass brings light into an otherwise dark corner of our home.  This table lived out its former years as a display piece in a  little shop in Dekalb Illinois.  I knew when I saw it, it would be perfect for this spot!

Below, the table is set for a fiesta with friends!

Lube barrels become side tables, cast offs from an old trucking company.

Below, collections of milk glass vases filled with flowers.

Believe it or not, The tool caddy and electrical supply box were found at different flea markets in different states! My husband is a toolmaker by trade, I picked them up in our travels, as a nod to him! They house more of my vintage milkglass collection.
+++A glass container with mossy finds from our spot up north can be found in our bathroom.

Old spools, both metal and wood... repurposed as candle holders, brighten the mantel.

My crazy, colorful, original oil paintings inspired by places I've been and things I love.An old carriage foothold acts as a mini canvas holder, and an old root from an ancient fallen tree, deep in  the Rocky Mountains... polished and mounted is a special gift from an artist and friend.

Above, Colored pencils used in my artworkand Vintage bakelite knitting needles and colorful yarn below.

Metal film canisters from the 70's and postcards of the railroad, remind me of my Dad!

The  kitchen is filled with light and color, I enjoy collecting vintage artwork by unknown artists. The  painting below was done in the 1930s it is happy in my kitchen!

On the counter, the fruit bowl is one of my favorite things!
It was well used and repaired after cracking many years ago, with old metal pieces.
I imagine them from an old barn, shed or warehouse!
I can't help but think about the hands that took the time to repair it.
"Keep your sunny side up"...hangs in the window
while an artist's rendition, in glass, of a sunrise
sits on the window sill above the kitchen sink.

Mirrors added to vintage saucers bring a sparkle of light to the arched doorway.

2013 Cadillac SRX: Expert Car Review by Lauren Fix

The new and improved 2013 Cadillac SRX is the best-selling model line under the Cadillac brand. Let's take a closer look.

Model -- 2013 Cadillac SRX
MPG -- 17 city / 24 hwy.
Engine -- 3.6L V6 engine that produces 308 horsepower
Towing Capacity: 3000lbs.
Price -- base price starts at $37,155
Test Vehicle: AWD Premium Collection with destination $53,520.

The 2013 SRX has been freshened with a new front fascia that includes LED lighting in the fender vents. Inside, every SRX receives Cadillac's CUE 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Active-noise cancellation aims to make the SRX quieter, and new technology such as adaptive cruise control is available.

The 2013 Cadillac SRX seats five and comes in standard, premium, luxury and performance trims. Each trim has a V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional. There are interior material upgrades, including wood trim, as well as additional technology and safety features.

My test drive was comfortable and the SRX had ample power and handled well on the road. Getting into the garage or a parking spot was made easier by the Safety Alert Seat, which sends subtle pulses through the seat cushion, alerting the driver of potential hazards.

The Cadillac CUE system was easy to use, with touch screen controls for navigation, Bluetooth, audio, temperature and more.

Competes with:
• Porsche Cayenne
• Lincoln MKX
• Land Rover LR2
• Audi Q5
• BMW X3
• Volvo XC60

Likes:
• Plentiful features
• Comfortable ride
• Classy cabin design
• CUE smart infotainment system

Dislikes:
• Shift points on transmission
• Turning radius could be tighter
• Seats need more lateral support

The 2013 Cadillac SRX is luxury crossover with angular and athletic looks, a strong engine, comfortable ride, plush cabin and creature comforts that impress.

Remember, when shopping for a new car, test drive as many vehicles as you can in the class you are looking in to make sure you find the car that is best for you. For more information, visit www.cadillac.com.

Be Car Care Aware: Winter Emergency Kit for Your Car

To contact us Click HERE

The weather can change with little notice. When it does, is your car prepared?

The leading cause of death during winter storms is transportation accidents. Preparing your vehicle for the winter season and knowing how to react if stranded or lost on the road are the keys to safe winter driving. Now is the time to "Be Car Care Aware." Make sue sure your vehicle is well maintained year round.

Dress warmly and wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing so you can adjust with the temperatures and conditions.

Be prepared! Before a winter storm strikes, plan your travel and check the latest weather reports.

When the weather turns cold, add these few extras to any basic emergency kit which should be in your car at all times:

WINTER STORM SURVIVAL KIT:
• Hand warmers -- instant heat packs (carry 4 per person—it'll give you 8 hours of warmth if you're stuck)
• An aggressive snowbrush and ice scraper -- don't skimp on either.
• De-icer washer fluid
• Blankets/sleeping bags
• Snow boots
• Extra pairs of thick gloves
• A hat and scarf
• Food and water—carry a supply of high-energy snacks and several bottles of water just in case you get stuck
• Extra medications you may take regularly
• A large empty can and plastic bags with tissues and paper towels for sanitary purposes
• A smaller can and water-proof matches or a lighter to melt snow for drinking water.
• Sack of sand or cat litter (for traction)
• Shovel
• Tow rope
• LED light source

Plus: Keep your gas tank at no less than half a tank to avoid freezing the tank and fuel lines. Try not to travel alone. Let someone know your timetable and primary and alternate routes.

Follow these tips if you get trapped in your car during a blizzard:
1. Stay in the car. Do not leave the car to search for assistance unless help is visible within 100 yards. You may become disoriented and lost in blowing and drifting snow.

2. Display a trouble sign and flashing hazard lights

3. Hang a brightly colored cloth on the radio antenna

4. Turn on the car's engine for about 10 minutes each hour. Run the heater when the car is running.

5. Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow. If nessesary, open a downwind window slightly for ventilation.

6. Watch for signs of frostbite, dehydration and hypothermia

7. Do minor exercises to keep up circulation. Clap your hands and move arms and legs occasionally. Try not to stay in one position for too long.

8. If more than one person is in the car, take turns sleeping

9. For warmth, huddle together

10. Use newspapers, maps, and even the removable car mats for added insulation

11. Avoid overexertion—cold weather puts an added strain on the heart. If you are unaccustomed to exercise, shoveling snow or pushing a car can bring on a heart attack or make other medical conditions worse.

EPA + MPG = SOL OEMs EDITION

To contact us Click HERE

THE CAR COACH REPORTS:  Feb. 15, 2013
EPA + MPG = SOL OEMs  EDITION

First it was Hyundai with overstated MPG figures on several of its models, then it was Ford with the Fusion Hybrid.  Now, the EPA is investigating even more MPG claims: http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130213/OEM11/130219920/epa-looks-to-audit-more-mpg-claims#axzz2KyeV8ZSf
Now I tend to drive with a bit of a lead foot so my vehicles never match the stated MPG claims on the window sticker.  I can accept this since OEM's MPG testing is typically conducted under conservative and ideal driving conditions.
However, it seems there are a number of situations occurring lately that involve conservative drivers missing the stated MPG mark no matter how feather-footed they are.  What gives?
Are OEMs lying to us?  Are their tests that disconnected from real world driving?  With gas as expensive as it is this days, many car buyers are paying close attention to window sticker claims now more than ever.  In fact, fuel-economy is one of the top three reasons car buyers choose a specific make and model.
On a personal note, a colleague of mine recently drove his new car, which has a stated 33 MPG highway, for 10 hours straight, averaging 60 mph.  It returned 27 MPG.  He only made one stop the entire trip to fuel up and shut the motor off during this process.  This is almost a 20 percent difference and yet he drove the entire length of the trip in a conservative manner on flat highways with no traffic and ideal weather conditions.  Even if you factor in a 3-4 percent loss due to E10, there is still quite a discrepancy.
And this type of scenario is quite common--I hear it from my readers all the time.  Because of this, I am actually going to go out on a limb and say that the Feds should step in and investigate this situation.  If manufacturers are lying to us and are exaggerating their MPG claims, then we, the American car buying public, are being duped into spending more at the pump than we should and that is just not acceptable.

What are your thoughts?

My Final Thought:

Have you been keeping up with the Tesla / NY Times debacle?  Apparently, a writer at the Times made some negative claims during a test drive review of the Model S but Tesla says it has the data to refute them.  http://jalopnik.com/new-york-times-makes-it-sound-like-tesla-doesnt-know-h-204904371
They can't both be right but whoever is will certainly make the other look very foolish!

GM CAN IMPROVE ITS STOCK EDITION

To contact us Click HERE

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: Feb. 8, 2013
GM CAN IMPROVE ITS STOCK EDITION

With the increase of market share from the German car manufacturers, especially the VW group, GM has noticed that its own market share is not returning to where it was before the bankruptcy.
The first step is to get the government out of their daily business and pay back their loans as quickly as possible to improve stock value as well as consumer perception and brand equity.
Secondly, see what the competitors are doing in order to regain market share. Start with diesel: No US, Japanese or Korean manufacturers have delivered diesel-powered cars, only the Germans.
The last time General Motors offered a diesel passenger car in the US; it was the 1.8-liter 1986 Chevette. Fast forward nearly three decades to the 2013 Chicago Auto Show and GM is unveiling the much-anticipated diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze with a compact 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that boasts 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 2.0-liter diesel engine can return up to 42 mpg (highway) and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, matching its main competition, the VW Jetta TDI.  The Cruze 2.0 TD can also handle up to 20 percent biodiesel (B20).
The Cruze's diesel engine will be built in Kaiserslautern, Germany and the car will be produced starting in April at GM's Lordstown, OH plant. The Chevy Cruze 2.0 TD will start at $25,595.
This is a departure for GM as they have put all their money in the past into EV and hybrid cars like the Chevy Volt. Obviously, based on sales results, consumers are not purchasing them at their expected sales levels.
Diesel cars are generally 20-30 percent more efficient than their traditional gas counterparts but haven't caught on in the US even though more than 50 percent of Europeans drive them. Is it time for a change?  I think so.
I personally give GM a great deal of credit for offering a diesel alternative in a marketplace where other manufacturers haven't dared to go, and I firmly believe this can and will help their market share.

What are your thoughts?

Sunday Morning Sausage Biscuits and Gravy

To contact us Click HERE
tastythumb.files.wordpress.com  until I get my own photo!

A family favorite since my friend taught me how to make it almost 25 years ago
Here's the simple recipe
Preheat oven to 400* or to specifications on the recipe for the biscuits you would like to prepare
For the gravy you will need:
1  1lb package Breakfast sausage   ( I like Jimmy Dean,  or Tennessee Pride original the best)FlourMilkSeasoning salt
Pepper to taste
For the biscuits you will need:
1 tube of biscuits ...big homestyle buscits from pillsbury ( the ones in the tube) and bake them for 8-10 minutes while the gravy is thickening. You may also make your own from bisquick or your favorite recipe.  I find the pillsbury are just as good.
I brown the breakfast sausage in a large saute pan on medium heat.  Once browned, sprinkle the meat with flour.  ( I use about 1/4 cup of flour)  and swizzle around the pan for about 2 minutes for the flour to absorb the flavor from the sausage.

When the sausage is coated with the flour, begin adding the milk to cover the meat.  Stir until the mixture thickens. Sprinkle with seasoning salt and pepper to taste. Stiring occasionally.

While the gravy is thickening, pop the biscuits into the oven and bake as recommended on the package, usually 8-10 minutes.
Continue to stir the gravy.  It will thicken over time and become even thicker when it is removed from the heat.
Remove the biscuits from the oven and split.
Place the split biscuits on a plate and spoon sausage gravy over top as desired
This recipe will feed 4 hungry adults at 2 biscuits each.

MPG Mixed Messages Edition

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: January 4, 2013
MPG Mixed Messages Edition
Buy EV, hybrid and fuel efficient cars, the government says.  Let’s not be dependent on foreign oil!  Let’s save the environment and develop new ways to propel our cars!  Let’s mandate that all the OEMs double their fuel efficiency standards!  Hooray, we’re going to be a green proficient country!
Not so fast.  If we all drive alternative energy and fuel-efficient cars, how will the government make up for the loss of tax revenue at the pump?  Well, it seems Oregon is considering one method: http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/03/oregon-to-consider-additional-tax-on-gas-efficient-vehicles/
So the feds are shoving their green agenda down our throats but the states could punish us for it?
Basically, the consumer can’t win.  We’ll have no choice but to drive fuel efficient vehicles in the near future if Obama gets his way.  Okay, I can deal with that.  There’s nothing wrong with a miserly vehicle as long as it remains quick enough to get out of its own way and strong enough to tow a trailer when needed.  But to then tell us that we have to pay taxes because we’re doing the right thing is just ludicrous.
Granted, the roads and related infrastructure need to be maintained, but a tax on EVs and other fuel-efficient vehicles isn’t the answer.  It singles out those who are trying to save money and be environmentally conscious at the same time.  I think Oregon should be looking at the cars that pollute the most and tax them instead.
The scariest part about all of this is that Oregon is considering tracking efficient cars via GPS and taxing them per mile.  Do you want the government to track your car?  I sure don’t.
What’s next, a tax on those who install solar electricity on their homes?  Why not?  The state can’t tax them on their electric bill.  How about a tax on helping the homeless while we’re at it?!
It’s a slippery slope.  If we allow our elected representatives to tax EVs and fuel-efficient cars today, it will be easier for them to tax whatever they want tomorrow.

What are your thoughts?

Volkwagen Factory Tour in Wolfsburg, Germany

To contact us Click HERE

The VW Beetle started its life in Wolfsburg, Germany at a huge plant that's over 5,000 acres. It’s a pre-World War II building, and we’ll have a chance to look inside.

The Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, located one hour away from Berlin, prides itself in being the largest auto plant in the world. Its adjacent “Autostadt” (car city) is a theme park dedicated to the automobile and offers everything car enthusiasts of all ages dream about.

Fans of the VW brand may feel like they have died and gone to heaven here. There is a huge car museum and several pavilions dedicated to the various VW cars. Embark on a glass elevator, which takes you to the top of the 160 feet high glass Car Tower. This tower holds up to 800 custom-ordered cars, which are picked up by their buyers fresh from the factory.
The Wolfsburg plant in North Germany is also the Head Quarters of the Volkswagen group. It is about 3 square miles and one of the largest and most advanced car factories in the world. It contains the largest state-of-the-art paint shop in Europe, the first to use eco-friendly water-based paints.

Many different cars are built in this plant, including the Tiguan, Golf and other models for European markets.

The press shop at Wolfsburg processes 1,500 metric tons of sheet metal every day. The sheet metal is cut and pre-stamped into special plates, then fully galvanized for body panels.
The body shop is next in the production process. Various models can be built one after another on the same line with no major modifications or delay.

The paint shop achieves flawless results. After an intensive pre-treatment with all seams, folds and joints sealed, each car goes through to have sealants, color and protective layers applied.

The assembly line is where engines and features are brought together in precise configurations. After assembly, rigorous measurements, final adjustments and performance tests are carried out to ensure the quality our customers expect.

For most Volkswagens coming off the assembly line, the first big trip takes the form of a rail journey. If they prefer, European customers can take delivery of their new Volkswagen from the glass tower, delivered to them in a waiting area.

The factory tour in Wolfsburg is open to the public every day from Tuesday to Friday; tours last for two hours.

VW has a plant in Chattanooga, TN that offers plant tours as well. You don’t have to own a Volkswagen to enjoy a car factory. It’s great fun for the whole family.

Child Safety Car Seats: How to Protect Your Children

To contact us Click HERE

Child passenger restraints are not an option- it's the law. Protect your children; they are your most precious cargo.

Courtesy of YNN/ Time Warner Cable
Aired: 1/10/2013

All children must be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle. Each state has their own specific safety laws, but consider this fact: motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children of every age between 2 and 14 in the United States.

Additionally, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers in passenger cars.

In 2006, motor vehicles crashes claimed the lives of 1,794 children under age 15 and injured 208,000 more!

Everyday in the United States, an average of 5 children aged 14 and younger are killed and 568 were injured in motor vehicle crashes.

Using a child safety seat properly can make the biggest difference in protecting your child.

Based upon the results of child safety seat checks conducted across many states, the "misuse rate" is actually much higher - it is more than 90 percent!

The best way to protect your child in the car is to put them in the right seat, at the right time, and use it the right way.

There are so many car seat types and models, how do you know which one is right for your child? The right car seat or booster fits your child and your car, and is one you will use correctly every time you travel. Not only will your child ride as safely as possible, you will be establishing the foundation for a lifelong habit of seat belt use every time your child travels.

•Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size, and choose a seat that fits in your vehicle and use it every time.
•Always refer to your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions; read the vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or LATCH system; and check height and weight limits.
•To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements.

Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: January 11, 2013
The Evils of E15 Edition
Anyone who reads my blogs, has seen me on TV or has talked to me knows I am not a proponent of Ethanol blended gasoline.  There is evidence that it can harm catalytic converters, damage two stroke motors and reduce gas mileage.
While we have only had to live with E10 fuels for the most part, the feds decided that E15 fuels are now a good idea.  This means that some gas stations are now selling gasoline that is 15 percent Ethanol.
I have been a staunch opponent of E15 for some time and have been chastised by some who claim to know better.  They say there is no evidence that E15 can hurt your car and that it’s perfectly safe.  They’re wrong: http://www.api.org/news-and-media/news/newsitems/2012/may-2012/research-group-tests-show-e15-damages-vehicle-engines.aspx
This article, which has existed for the better part of a year, has been ignored by the mainstream media and anyone else connected to Obama’s green agendas.  Why?  Because it stems from a non-profit tied to the oil companies and the oil companies don’t want to have to blend Ethanol into gasoline because it is expensive.
Regardless of who conducted the study in the API article, the fact remains E15 is bad for your car.  Don’t believe me?  Then listen to AAA: http://m.autos.aol.com/article/fiscal-cliff-ethanol-E15-tax-credit/
AAA has absolutely nothing to gain by saying E15 is a bad idea.  In fact, AAA is a trusted non-profit that has been helping motorists for decades.  What’s more, your tax dollars are helping to fund the very thing that could damage your car, according to the AAA story.  That’s right, the fiscal cliff deal that was recently passed provides tax credits for gas stations that use E15 and it’s coming out of your paychecks.
To add insult to injury, not only will E15 prematurely wear out your car, it could also void your warranty.
So let’s recap: We’re paying for the proliferation of E15, which could destroy our cars and void our warranties.  We might as well pay someone to give us the flu while we’re at it.

My Final Thought:

Take look at this video on Jalopnik of an Audi that parks itself: http://jalopnik.com/5974824/watch-an-audi-become-self-aware-and-navigate-a-parking-garage-by-itself
All I can say is wow!!!  While I am not a big fan of self-driving cars because they take the joy out of driving, this situation is just impressive.  No one likes a parking gagrage!  Kudos to Audi!

Winterize Your Car: Car Expert Lauren Fix

Winterizing your vehicle is a wise idea. The last thing any driver needs is a vehicle that breaks down in cold, harsh, icy winter weather. A vehicle check before the temperatures drops is a sensible way to avoid both the inconvenience of being stranded out in the cold and the unexpected expense of emergency repairs.

I recommend the following steps for winterizing your vehicle:
1. Battery - Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.

2. Antifreeze - Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.

3. Engine oil - Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to "winter weight" oil if you live in a cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

4. Stay warm - Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly.

5. Winter wiper blades - use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

6. Tires - Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

7. Problems - If you're due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

8. Brakes - Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle's most important safety item.

9. Exhaust - Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

10. All the Lights - Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.

11. Gasoline - Motorists should keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming and possibly freezing in the gas lines.

12. Carry the proper gear- Don’t drive anywhere without an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, tire inflation product, jumper cables, flashlight, LED flares, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: January 18, 2013
Detroit Delight Edition
As many of you know, The North American International Auto Show kicked off this week.  This is the granddaddy of all auto shows where OEMs trot out their new wares in high style for the coming year.
While there were many stand outs in Detroit, I’m going to focus on a couple of American vehicles because they were the boldest and the best in my humble opinion.
Let’s start with the 2014 Corvette.  While I have not been a big fan of the GM bailout at taxpayer’s expense, let me just say that the General did this one right and that  new Vette is absolutely spectacular. http://autos.aol.com/article/Corvette-C7-Chevrolet-Chevy-Stingray-Detroit/
Everything about this car screams performer and it’s a bargain to boot.  For around $50k, I can honestly say that you can get a true race car for the street that will also coddle you and make you look good in the process.  While some say the plethora of vents make the exterior look too busy, they probably don’t realize that these vents are all functional and necessary.  Besides, any of the darker color paint jobs make them blend right in.
Another gripe I heard is from the purist crowd lamenting the square tail lights.  I say hooey to this!  That’s one of the meanest rear ends I’ve seen and it looks right at home on the new Vette.
Speaking of mean, check out this Ford truck concept: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-news/concept-cars/detroit-naias-2013-ford-atlas-concept-pickup-truck
If the rumors are true, this will essentially be the new Ford F150.  All I can say is: Please build it and don’t change a thing!!!  This is one brutish-looking truck, yet it’s sophisticated and handsome all at the same time.  Good job Ford!

What do you think?  Would you want a Corvette-powered Fisker Karma?  I don’t think I would mind one at all.

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: January 25, 2013
Gas Tax Quandary Edition
Fuel efficient vehicles are a good thing.  They emit fewer pollutants, cost less to operate, and they help reduce our dependence on foreign oil.  While there are drawbacks such as lack of power and towing capability, it seems the benefits for the average driver outweigh the negatives.
However, there is one major glaring issue that fuel efficient cars and trucks present: Lower gas tax revenues.
So what, right?  Don’t our state and federal governments collect enough taxes?  Well, maybe but the gas tax they collect, especially from the state governments, is allocated to build and improve our road infrastructure.
Nobody likes potholes or other road issues such as those pesky failing bridges that span enormous waterways.  Imagine there was no revenue to deal with these issues?  Imagine the bridge you take to work every day collapsing beneath you.
So now what?  While some states are thinking about charging drivers by the mile, others are pondering raising their gas taxes quite a bit. While these ideas may resolve the situation, Virginia’s governor wants to take a very different tack; he wants to eliminate the gas tax altogether: http://business.time.com/2013/01/16/virginia-is-worried-cars-are-becoming-too-fuel-efficient/#ixzz2IofDoIEo
Huh?  What would that solve?  Actually, quite a bit.  If gas were cheaper, motorists would drive more and buy more goods according to economists.  Additionally, the cost of these goods, which are delivered by gas-guzzling trucks, would decrease in price.  This is all very good for a state’s economy.
But what about the gas tax for road infrastructure? That would be covered by a modest increase in state sales tax from 5 percent to 5.8 percent.  Critics argue that consumers can’t afford this kind of increase but it’s still cheaper than most states’ sales tax rates.
Critics also say that it’s unfair to those who don’t drive.  Why should they have to subsidize roads for those who do drive?  To this I say don’t get me started on what taxpayers subsidize who don’t benefit from the services they’re funding.  The same argument could be applied to those who don’t have children who pay property taxes to fund schools.
Virginia’s governor also wants to impose a $100 annual fee on electric cars because they don’t use gas yet still enjoy the benefits of public roadways.  I have mixed feelings about this.  Those who drive EVs are environmentally responsible and are helping to ease us off foreign oil.  Yet they can drive in carpool lanes by themselves and likely already received state and federal tax breaks.  Should they have to pay a yearly tax?
