THE CAR COACH REPORTS: WEEK IN REVIEW 6-15-12
THE PONY WARS RAGE ON EDITION
It’s been a slow news week in the automotive world. Saab is potentially still alive, GM is changing up its pension program to shed more bloat, and Fiat is boosting its stake in Chrysler. What else is new? It’s like the needle is skipping on the turntable of the auto industry!
However, a “news” piece from Edmunds.com via AutoBlog caught my eye on Wednesday: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/06/13/camaro-zl1-goes-head-to-head-with-shelby-gt500-in-1-242-horsepow/#continued
A head-to-head comparison with the new Camaro ZL1 and the new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500? Yes please!
As expected, the Shelby out accelerated the ZL1 but not by much. And surprisingly, the heavier, less-powerful ZLI handled better on the slalom and skid pad. Perhaps this is attributed to the Shelby’s antiquated rear solid axle but one would think that with all the advanced technology Ford’s muscle car has packed into it, plus the fact that it weighs much less than the Camaro, that it would be able to keep up with its Bowtie brethren.
What good is all that power in the Shelby if it can’t perform in the twisties? I’m not saying the Shelby is a slouch when it comes to handling, but I expected more from this car, especially with the ridiculous amount of power under the hood (and I mean that in a good way).
So while it appears that Ford rained on Chevy’s parade when it announced the 2013 Shelby GT500, Chevy is sprinkling a bit of ha-ha precipitation right back on Ford with its better-handling Camaro ZL1.
Now where’s Chrysler in all of this? Their best offering is the Challenger SRT8, with a measly 470 hp. I say this in jest because 470 hp is nothing to sneeze at. It will be interesting to see what the SRT guys have in store for next year.
The American Pony wars are alive and well.

My Final Thought
Last week I shared a Jalopnik report regarding a truck crash that spilled maple syrup all over a road called Buttermilk Pike: http://jalopnik.com/5916836/semi-crash-spills-maple-syrup-all-over-buttermilk-pike
This week it’s steak and onions: http://jalopnik.com/5918380/a-truck-full-of-meat-collided-with-a-truck-full-of-onions
Sometimes truth is truly stranger than fiction…and now I’m hungry.
See you next week! Love Your Car! --Lauren Fix
