YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID EDITION

You can’t fix stupid.  Nor can you teach common sense.  So why is the government even trying?  http://www.autoblog.com/2012/06/07/dot-releases-blueprint-for-ending-distracted-driving/
Driving fatalities are at an all-time low, manufacturers are including hands-free Bluetooth in just about every vehicle, and yet Ray LaHood, NHTSA and the DOT are cracking down on distracted driving like Wyatt Earp at the O.K. Corral.
Why would LaHood and his minions want to focus their attention and our tax dollars on something that can’t be prevented?  No matter how hard they try, no matter how much education they offer, and no matter how many fines and tickets are issued, you just can’t make people have common sense.
Everyone knows texting and driving is a bad idea yet so many still do it because they are just plain ignorant, arrogant, and/or lack common sense.  How do you fix this?  You don’t, and the nannies in our government are foolhardy for even trying.
Besides, even if all texting, cell phone conversations, MP3s, radios, DVDs, etc, were banned and we drove cars that had the technology of a Model T, there would still be a slew of distractions while driving.
These include but aren’t not limited to: screaming children, quiet children, talking passengers, billboards, pretty trees, low-flying airplanes, interesting buildings, large houses, small houses, your job, your spouse, your parents, your siblings, your friends, fluffy dogs, short-haired dogs, all manner of cats, horses, your thoughts, a bee in your car, trains, cool boats, motorcycles and jet skis, clouds, itchy clothing, a flock of seagulls (the animals and the rock band), restaurants, museums, parks, flying Frisbees in parks, mountains, stadiums, roadside fruit stands and homeless people.
I say we ban all of these, especially mountains!  Who’s with me?  Why do I hear crickets chirping?  Crickets!  That’s another one!  We should ban all crickets from cars!  They are so distracting and probably cause two wrecks per millennium!
The point I’m trying to make here is where do we draw the line?  When do we say enough is enough?  I’m all for no distractions while driving but the government can’t change human nature, as flawed as it is.

THE CAR COACH REPORTS: WEEK IN REVIEW 7-6-12
DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT EDITION

The car theft season has begun, according to the FBI: http://autos.aol.com/article/car-theft-season-kicking-off/
It seems July 4th is an unofficial marker for the start of the rise of car thieves doing their bad deeds.  They strike at night, during the day, at shopping centers and in your driveway.  If you own a vehicle, you’re at risk, especially if it’s in the top 10 list of stolen rides according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau:
These were the most stolen vehicles in 2010.  The 2011 list will be available in August:
  1. 1994 Honda Accord
  2. 1995 Honda Civic
  3. 1991 Toyota Camry
  4. 1999 Chevrolet Pickup (Full Size)
  5. 1997 Ford F150 Series/Pickup
  6. 2004 Dodge Ram
  7. 2000 Dodge Caravan
  8. 1994 Acura Integra
  9. 2002 Ford Explorer
  10. 1999 Ford Taurus

Even if your vehicle isn’t on this list, you always should be vigilant.  Here are six tips to help you keep your car out of the hands of thieves:
1.     Park in a well-lit area at night.
2.     Do not leave any valuables in plain sight in your car
3.     Alarm systems by themselves don’t work.  They’re usually easily bypassed and most people ignore the sirens.  Get an engine immobilizer.
4.     Clear out that garage and park your car in it.  You’d be surprised how many vehicles are stolen from owners’ driveways in the middle of the night.
5.     Disconnect your battery if you’re leaving your car parked for extended periods of time.  This is especially handy if you don’t have an alarm or engine immobilizer and park at airports frequently.
6.     Get a car cover.  A thief will not take the time to remove it and will move on to another car.

My Final Thought
Is this a good idea?
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/06/30/terrafugia-flying-car-completes-first-round-of-test-flights/
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say no.  While this may be a niche mode of transportation initially, many companies are striving to build these things and we could see an eventual proliferation that could fill the skies with carplanes.
Think about the average driver.  Now think about him or her behind the controls of an airplane.  Yikes!
What are your thoughts?

The Car Coach: Can-Am Spyder - YNN, Your News Now

The Car Coach: Can-Am Spyder

By: Lauren Fix, The Car Coach The 2012 Can-Am Spyder is the coolest and most unique motorcycle on the road. Let’s take a closer look. Model – 2012 Can-Am Spyder
MPG – 27-35 mpg.
Engine – Rotax 998cc V-Twin engine mated to one of two available five-speed transmissions plus reverse
Price – starts at $16,499

The Can-Am shook up the motorcycling world when Bombardier, known for making Ski-Doo snowmobiles, off-road offerings and watercraft entered the on-road realm with its three-wheeled contraption called the Spyder. It looked different on the road, its two-front, single rear wheel combination, aggressive styling and a focus on performance, many didn’t know whether to dismiss the oddity as a passing fascination or embrace it as a viable mode of transportation. For 2012, two major versions are offered, the Can-Am Spyder RS and Spyder RT Roadsters. The 2012 RS is tailored more for the solo rider and comes with a slightly more aggressive riding position and different bodywork while the RT is designed for full-on two-up touring. The 2012 Can-Am Spyder RT starts as a basic package but comes in three models, the Spyder RT Audio & Convenience, Spyder RT-S, and Spyder RT Limited. Add-ons run the gamut from an improved sound system with iPod compatability, AM / FM and optional satellite radio, handlebar-mounted push-button controls, adjustable rear air suspension, GPS navigation, LED lighting, and exclusive colors.

The Spyder RS is also equipped with a Vehicle Stability System. It has several technologies it borrowed from the automotive world such as anti-lock brakes and traction and stability control systems.

Competes with all motorcycles:
It’s a good fit for people that want a motorcycle experience but are afraid or not capable of balancing a two wheeler at a full stop. Likes:
• Automatic transmission option
• Comfortable ride
• Edgy design
• Great option with to a traditional motorcycle. Dislikes:
• Pricier than competitors
• Fuel economy could be better My test drive in the Can-Am Spyder was really a lot of fun, it was well-equipped with a smooth riding and easy to handle. Remember, when shopping for a new car or motorcycle, test drive as many vehicles as you can in the class you are looking in to make sure you find the car that is best for you. www.can-am.brp.com

The Car Coach: Insurance Rates - YNN, Your News Now

The Car Coach: Insurance Rates

By: Lauren Fix, The Car Coach Insurance rates seem to always climb up each year, especially if you have a newer car and teen drivers. As Lauren Fix, the Car Coach, reports, there are a ways to cut your insurance costs. There is nothing that makes your wallet squeal louder today than pulling into the gas station and dropping $50. Until you receive your insurance invoice. According to the Insurance Information Institute, the national average auto insurance premium is $850 per year. Can you reduce that? • Shop around regularly. Your insurance agent doesn’t have a lot of incentive to reduce your premiums. Some people stick with the same agent just to because it’s easier but it may be costing you more than you think. The internet makes it easy compare costs for the same coverage, or you can get an independent insurance agent to shop for you. • Bundle your coverage. Bundling is combining different types of policies (auto, homeowners, liability, etc.) with the same company. The theory is that the company will discount the premiums if they have all of your business. The most common combination is packaging your auto insurance and homeowner’s policies together. Or, find companies that will bundle auto insurance with renter’s or tenant’s insurance. Bundled packages usually result in a 10 to 15 percent savings. • Ask for discounts. You may qualify for discounts, but you won’t know until you ask. They’re commonly offered for good driving records, anti-theft devices, vehicle safety features (anti-lock brakes, air bags, etc.), low annual mileage and insuring more than one car, buying your policy online, paying in full up front, and being a loyal customer. • Take a defensive driving class. Even if you’ve been driving for years, you can learn a lot from driver education and most insurance companies recognize the value of a refresher course, which can help you avoid accidents. The amount of discount varies by insurance company and from state to state, although most insurers offer a 10 percent discount on your premium for three years. AARP offers a driver safety program for those over age 50, and it’s available online. • Increase your deductible. Do your auto and homeowners policies have low deductibles? If so, you may be able to reduce your premiums 15 to 30 percent by raising the deductible on your collision and comprehensive coverage. Make sure you have an emergency fund set aside to cover the cost of repairs before you make the change. • Change Cars. This is probably the most difficult savings tip to implement but may have the largest impact on your premium. Used cars are cheaper to insure than new ones; sports cars are more expensive to insure than minivans. Insurance companies like cars with safety features and low repair costs. Insure.com surveyed 900 vehicles in the 2012 model year and the cheapest were minivans.

The Car Coach: Quick Detail - YNN, Your News Now

In a perfect world, we'd have time to wash our cars every weekend and wax them as necessary to maintain the factory finish as long as possible. In reality, few of us spend as much time on car care as we should. Lauren Fix, the Car Coach, has some helpful information.

Knowing that time is always of the essence, the car-care industry developed "instant detailers." These products are formulated to give paint that "wet look" without having to wash and wax the car. They typically contain shine-fortifying chemicals and are roughly the automotive equivalent of Pledge or Endust. Instant detailers help get rid of dust, fingerprints and smudges without stripping the wax.

10-Minute Job:
Realize that instant detailers aren't for extremely dirty cars. Ideally, use a car-duster first to remove loose grit.

Applying a detail spray is probably the quickest, easiest visual improvement you could perform on your car. They elevate shine tremendously while making wiping away dirt, dust and smudges an effortless task. Detail sprays are meant to top off your wax or paint sealant, not stand in for them. You apply a detail spray as a way to extend the life of your protectant.

These are great for stretching the time between major details to keep your car looking fresh.

Spray and wipe to detail under the hood, door jambs, trunk decks, bumpers, and glass! Detailing sprays literally can be used on the entire exterior for an instant gloss. Keep it in your glove compartment to use anytime you want to restore the just-waxed finish.

Tips For Best Results:
•The car should be cool, although most instant detailers can be applied in the daylight.
•Spray-on the instant detailer in sections.
•Distribute the detailer evenly using a dry towel; microfiber-style towels work best.
•Buff the detailer dry before it evaporates with a clean portion of the towel.
•If the instant detailer won't buff out easily, the car needs to be waxed.
•Look for a name brand product you recognize. If you buy poor quality products, you’ll get what you pay for. A name brand will offer advanced formulas that make it easy to keep your car cleaner, longer.
