THE CAR COACH REPORTS: WEEK IN REVIEW 6-8-12
YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID EDITION

You can’t fix stupid.  Nor can you teach common sense.  So why is the government even trying?  http://www.autoblog.com/2012/06/07/dot-releases-blueprint-for-ending-distracted-driving/
Driving fatalities are at an all-time low, manufacturers are including hands-free Bluetooth in just about every vehicle, and yet Ray LaHood, NHTSA and the DOT are cracking down on distracted driving like Wyatt Earp at the O.K. Corral.
Why would LaHood and his minions want to focus their attention and our tax dollars on something that can’t be prevented?  No matter how hard they try, no matter how much education they offer, and no matter how many fines and tickets are issued, you just can’t make people have common sense.
Everyone knows texting and driving is a bad idea yet so many still do it because they are just plain ignorant, arrogant, and/or lack common sense.  How do you fix this?  You don’t, and the nannies in our government are foolhardy for even trying.
Besides, even if all texting, cell phone conversations, MP3s, radios, DVDs, etc, were banned and we drove cars that had the technology of a Model T, there would still be a slew of distractions while driving.
These include but aren’t not limited to: screaming children, quiet children, talking passengers, billboards, pretty trees, low-flying airplanes, interesting buildings, large houses, small houses, your job, your spouse, your parents, your siblings, your friends, fluffy dogs, short-haired dogs, all manner of cats, horses, your thoughts, a bee in your car, trains, cool boats, motorcycles and jet skis, clouds, itchy clothing, a flock of seagulls (the animals and the rock band), restaurants, museums, parks, flying Frisbees in parks, mountains, stadiums, roadside fruit stands and homeless people.
I say we ban all of these, especially mountains!  Who’s with me?  Why do I hear crickets chirping?  Crickets!  That’s another one!  We should ban all crickets from cars!  They are so distracting and probably cause two wrecks per millennium!
The point I’m trying to make here is where do we draw the line?  When do we say enough is enough?  I’m all for no distractions while driving but the government can’t change human nature, as flawed as it is.

My Final Thought
You can’t make this stuff up: http://jalopnik.com/5916836/semi-crash-spills-maple-syrup-all-over-buttermilk-pike
A tuck crash spilled maple syrup all over a road called Buttermilk Pike.
While any crash is unfortunate to say the least, at least this one is worthy of an ironic chuckle, especially since no one was seriously injured.
Talk about a sticky situation!!! (Cue those crickets again)
