THE CAR COACH REPORTS: WEEK IN REVIEW 9-28-12

CALIFORNIA DRONES EDITION
Ah, California. Land of sunshine, Hollywood glamour, beautiful beaches, picturesque mountains, horrid taxes, abysmal traffic, overcrowding, gang problems, a nanny state government, and soon-to-be driverless cars.
Yes, driverless cars.  http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120925/OEM06/309259739/california-gives-green-light-to-driverless-cars
Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea?  Think of how often your computer crashes or how it is susceptible to malcontents hell-bent on uploading a virus to it.  Now apply that scary thought to a two-ton moving vehicle.
Can you imagine rolling down the 405 at 60 mph when a hacker takes control of your car and disables the brakes?  Or what if your car suddenly gets the vehicular equivalent of the blue screen of death and locks up while you’re transporting your kid to the hospital?
Perhaps I’m being a bit over-the-top here, but leaving the driving to computers is something I don’t want to see in my lifetime.  Computers don’t have instincts and good drivers have good instincts.
Besides, what about the joy of driving?  People love their cars.  Manufacturers make them fun to drive.  The more I see technology (and let’s not forget about government) taking over our lives, the more I see our individual liberties being taken away and this is a disturbing trend to say the least.
We have to buy healthcare, we can’t drink large sodas, we have to pay taxes that end up going to wasteful politicians, our kids can’t open lemonade stands without a permit, we get groped at the airport, and now we’ll likely end up being banned from driving our own cars.
Eventually, we’ll just be mindless caricatures of ourselves, sitting in our automatic cars, sipping on our government supplied protein drinks, while the computers and the government run our lives.
What do you think?

My Final Thought:
Here’s a prime example of why cars should never be driverless:  http://jalopnik.com/5946678/jaguar-f+type-a-495-horsepower-v8+powered-beauty
Right on, Jaguar!  Beautiful car!
Now please bring down the price a bit?

Love your car!  See you next week!
