THE CAR COACH REPORTS: WEEK IN REVIEW 9-7-12
I COULDA HAD A V-8 EDITION
They say there’s no replacement for displacement; larger engines provide more torque and horsepower. They’re better at launches off the line, towing, and they last longer because they don’t work as hard as their smaller counterparts.
Perhaps that’s just a bunch of malarkey though.  Today’s smaller, modern engines with direct injection and turbochargers can keep right up with V-8s in terms of horsepower and they get better fuel economy.
In fact, many automakers are shying away from the big motors, including Infiniti: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/09/05/infiniti-moving-away-from-v8-power/
Ford saw the writing on the wall last year and came out with a turbocharged V-6 that hustles their F150 along quite nicely.
While there’s something to be said for the sound and feel of an eight cylinder motor, it seems we will see precious few of them in the near future.  Get used to boosted V-6s folks—it will likely be the only option for those looking for real power real soon.
I have to say that I’m torn on this subject.  On the one hand, the new engine technologies offered by today’s manufacturers are more efficient and better suited for the environment.  On the other hand, I absolutely love it when you can rev your engine and the entire car rocks from side to side because of the immense torque.  Try doing that in a V-6!
All of this has everything to do with the new CAFE standards imposed by the White House and little else.   I’ve said it countless times: Let drivers choose what kind of vehicles they want.  If they want efficiency, they’ll buy it.  If they want torque, let them have it!
I predict that eight cylinder vehicles will be gone in the next 10-15 years.

What do you think?

My Final Thought:
If you like James Bond, car chases and Aston Martins (and Lotus), then you need to watch this: http://jalopnik.com/5941055/james-bond-supercut-puts-every-bond-actor-into-one-orgasmic-car-chase

It appears that someone or some people have too much time on their hands but we the viewers benefit from it!

Love your car!  See you next week!
